Biography – Life Story – Family History Films

Your video biography, your life story or family history on film is the Present of a Lifetime.

How does Present of a Lifetime work?

Present of a Lifetime legacy videos and video biographies are available to anyone who wants to record their own experiences or those of a family member or friend. Those experiences can focus on your childhood memories, a working life or a specialist hobby or interest.

The filming is arranged at your home or another place of your choice – we can film outdoors too by arrangement. Your interviewer and filmer is Howard Jackson, who will put you at ease and guide the conversation. He’s well known for his relaxed, stress-free style and he will have you chatting away in no time. You’ll almost forget the camera is there!

On the day, we will take some photographs of you, your momentos and items that relate to your story to include in your video. Then we will produce your biography video with its own unique presentation cover and story insert.

Film No. 1

Lifestory video featuring extracts from a conversation with my sister in October, 2016

By way of a belated Christmas present I filmed a conversation with my sister in October, 2016. She did not know exactly what to expect and despite having been a teacher and still active in her church she was a little nervous to start with. But the
nerves disappeared very quickly.

Film No. 2

Conversation with Mr. Peter Brownson – Orthopaedic Surgeon and Pioneer of Keyhole Surgery

I have filmed Mr. Brownson a number of times but this is my favourite piece. The film lasts for close to seven minutes. It is informative, inspiring and at times moving as he describes what he does and even more importantly why he embarked on this particular career. Before I started filming I hoped that he had a great story about why he became a Surgeon – he did!

Film No. 3

A conversation with Chris Todd, several times England International Sheepdog Handler – filmed at Caldbeck Sheepdog Trials in August, 2011

A twelve minute conversation with Chris Todd, several times England international sheepdog handler from Loweswater, Cumbria. Chris talks about how he started to work sheepdogs when as a boy his family moved to a hill farm and how it developed into a lifelong commitment. Chris was a lovely man. I had never met him before but he was so easy to talk to. Sadly he passed away in 2016.

Film No. 4

Talking to Dan Sumner – Apprentice Horse Logger, working in Cumbria – filmed at John Ruskin’s house on the shores of Coniston

This film features a conversation with Dan Sumner (aged 44) who at the time of filming in February, 2012 was Apprenticed to George Reid who is probably the oldest and most experienced user of horses in forestry in the UK. The Apprenticeship has been supported by the British Horse Loggers Charitable Trust. In the film Dan talks about his passion for working with horses and the support he has received from George Reid.

All the support you need, every step of the way

And if you would like more information – here is how it all started

Howard’s first step into the world of multimedia was in the audio recording of conversations with friends and family. He recorded his first conversation with his friend and mentor Bill Graham. It was Bill who introduced Howard to Salmon fishing on the River Eden at Carlisle in the early 1970’s. Bill was in his mid eighties when Howard decided to record a conversation with him. The equipment was borrowed and scarcely up to the job and the sound quality was poor but the conversation was fantastic and Bill really put in a performance talking about over 60 years of experience as a fisherman. The recording of that conversation is a brilliant legacy and in the United States this sort of work is called family legacy recordings. Howard went on to record two conversations with his favourite aunty – Rita Gordon before a recording a second conversation with Bill on his working life on the railway in the North of England.

The conversations with Aunty Rita were about her life and in particular growing up in a family of thirteen in Shaddongate in Carlisle. You know the sort of thing – tin bath in front of the fire and hoards of scruffy kids – but brilliant stories and again a wonderful legacy for Rita’s family and anyone interested in ordinary life in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s……… Rita’s husband was taken off the beaches at Dunkirk during World War II and for years had a shaving brush with a piece of shrapnel stuck in it. The brush was in his back pack when the shrapnel landed!!!! Brilliant, treasured stories and it would be a tragedy if they had been lost.

After the success of those initial audio recordings Howard moved on to video and started to record lifestories on film. With the coming of Open Door Multimedia he invested in some serious professional film and recording equipment and of course the quality of recording improved dramatically. Those recordings included both set piece conversations and ad hoc conversations recorded with the characters he met and is still meeting during his filming projects. They include Chris Todd – a many times England International Sheepdog Handler, Verity Rhodes – a community volunteer who uses her voluntary work to help her to manage her own chronic mental health problems and Alison Thorpe whose role as the inspiration behind Lucky Hens Rescue in Wigan has led to the re-homing of 3,000 ex battery hens. All great characters and they all produced very entertaining conversations.

Family legacy recordings command a huge price in the United States and one company was recently advertising its entry level recording package at $3,500. Interesting they were using one of the same video cameras that Howard currently uses.

The prices charged by Open Door Multimedia are dramatically lower than this U.S. example but the projects are time consuming so that reflects in the cost. Packages are available from £350 (Audio only) and from £475 (Video) with exact prices determined by the content of the family legacy package.

Content will vary from person to person, family to family, project to project and can include the following:-

Recorded conversation(s) with the focus person individually or with one or more family members

Filmed visits to places of interest e.g. where the focus person was born or the schools they went to

Recordings of where the person worked or was married

Any available photographs can also be included.

Photographs can also be taken of any items of interest, souvenirs, momentos and can be included in the legacy package.
